Up for Sale! Our Summer Hygge Box!

The Hygge Family Box is a curated selection of our favourite local gifts aimed to bring families together delivered right to you! And this season we are excited to announce that our box is based on a Midsummers Picnic theme!

June 21 is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It’s actually a proper holiday in Scandinavia, where, in some places, the sun doesn’t even set. It’s called Midsummer, and it’s celebrated with bonfires, flower crowns, and picnics with cocktails, beautiful open faced sandwiches and desserts, aquavit (a Scandinavian hard liquor), rye, and caraway to last you until sundown! Sounds dreamy and very hyggelig! The perfect inspiration behind our summer box!

Created by The Mind Full Mommies and Giving Gifts

Our mission is to bring families together and create present-ness by being in the moment with the people you care about. That is what Hygge (Hue-gah) is all about! It is a Danish word that means coziness, warmth and togetherness. Every item in the Hygge Family Box has been carefully selected by Lisa, Stina and Bre. They are all beautiful gifts that we use in our homes, and with our own families, to create a warm and inviting environment filled with special meaningful moments.

Just a hint to some of the items in this box!

After seeing the incredible demand for the Hygge Family Box and receiving feedback we decided to create two versions. One for families with young kids (ages 2 to 12) and one for people with no kids (or older kids). Most of the items in both boxes will be exactly the same. The big difference between the two is that we substituted one item that is specifically for kids and changed up the 30-day challenge to be more reflective of activities adults would like to do.

Family Box/With Kids:

In this box you’ll receive your choice of the Yoga Pretzel Deck or Global Kids Activity Deck. A few words about each:

Yoga Pretzels Deck: 50 Fun Yoga Activities for Kids & GrownupsCalm the mind and body, improve patience and boost confidence with yoga! These 50 cards include forward bends, back bends, partner poses and balance poses.

“Through these fun yoga activities, children can improve flexibility, grace and agility while at the same time improving inner strength, confidence and self esteem” —Deepak Chopra, M.D.

Global Kids Activity Deck: 50+ Games, Crafts, Recipes & More from Around the WorldDiscover Global Kids, your new favorite tool for raising global citizens. Developed by global education expert Homa Tavangar, Global Kids includes 50+ hands-on activities divided into 5 categories to teach children about crafts, food, games, festivals and ways of helping others around the world. Bright artwork by Sophie Fatus make the steps on each card easy to follow. This is a powerful interactive resource for raising the next generation of global citizens.

Ages 5 and up

As educators, it is important to us that we included guided creative activities we know you and your kids will love! There are instructions for 5 hands-on activities in the Spring box that you can do right away with your kids (they are very easy, we promise).

Adults Box/Without Kids:

This box is made for people without kids or with older kids. We know how important it is for you to spend quality time with loved ones sharing special time together. This Hygge box will bring warmth and coziness into your home and give you ideas for special things you can do for yourself and together with other people you love.

What is Hygge by Bre and Stina:

There is no English word that directly translates from the Danish word Hygge (Hue-gah). It is often related to coziness during the colder months however to us Hygge means creating warmth, love, and togetherness by spending time with the ones you love all year round.

Growing up, Hygge was always a part of our lives but we didn’t come to realize how special and unique the practice of Hygge was until we were busy adults with our own families. In today’s world things are moving fast and taking the time to be present and spend time together as a family takes conscious effort and practice. We appreciate that our families prioritized Hygge and we have done the same for our children. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for other families to do the same. We love what is including in the Spring Family Hygge Box and know that it will bring warmth and comfort to your home and create togetherness and special memories for you and your loved ones.

Balancing Life As An Entrepreneur and Allergy Mom

The Ins and Outs of Parenting a Child with Severe Anaphalactic Allergies and Running Your Own Skin Care Business at Home

Alexandra Galbreth knows what it takes to navigate motherhood as an entrepreneur. From starting off as a French Immersion teacher and becoming a mom to two children-  to moving to a new city and starting a whole new life with her own business – to learning how to advocate for her son’s serious allergies and finding balance with health and wellness. She is the true example of the ultimate Mompreneur.

In this episode we discuss how Alexandra has managed to juggle life as a “Mompreneur”. She discusses partnering with the number one skin care brand in North America, Rodan + Fields and running her own business, what keeps her motivated and helps her to stay on track as well as what drives her passion for health, beauty and skin care. But above all and most importantly, she speaks about raising a son with severe anaphylactic food allergies and the affect that it’s had on their family’s life. She says, “ You are given this diagnoses and sent out into the world. Now what? There should have been some sort of counselling offered and more support. I felt like a fish out of water, learning the do’s and don’ts of allergies.” People often wondered how she kept her child safe and she realized there was a real need to help others understand what allergies mean and how lost and anxious you can feel  in the beginning stages of an allergy diagnoses. Just recently Alexandra has created a blog to share her journey and provide tips and recipes that she has learned and created over the last four years. The advice that Alexandra brings for all parents, including those of children with allergies and those of children without is incredibly helpful. After interviewing Alexandra in this podcast, we have a whole new appreciation for how terrifying an allergy diagnoses can be and the importance of educating others to prevent cross contamination.

Summer Hygge

The Danes and Norwegians look at Hygge as a recipe for a healthier and happier life. Having dinner with friends on a winter’s night, gathering around the fireplace with family during the holidays, or enjoying a candlelight dinner with a loved one are all examples of Hygge. But, winter is not the only time of year to embrace Hygge.
Hygge is really about taking the time to enjoy the simple and good things in life.

So… how can we embrace Hygge in the summer?

Dine outside. Host a barbeque, picnic or garden party in your own backyard. There’s nothing that spells happiness more than good weather, good friends, and good food!

Bring fresh fresh flowers in. There’s nothing more simple than a beautiful bouquet to brighten your spirits!

Freshen up your home with light and airy clean colors. Add light coloured throw pillows and throw blankets.

Instead of getting hyggelig inside with candles get hyggelig outside with lanterns and twinkle lights.

The Hygge Family box is filled with all sorts items to help you embrace summer hygge! To find out more about our seasonal box or to purchase one of boxes tap Here. 🥰

How to Make Paper Lanterns

How to make hanging paper lanterns | CRAFTS

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Choose some paper with patterns or a colour you like that are square sheets and are heavier than regular paper, but not as heavy as card stock.

glue gun

scissors

Step 2: Cut a strip off for the handle.

Step 3: Fold the sheet and make incisions

Fold your sheet of paper in half. Then, use scissors to cut a line from the folded bottom to about an inch away from the other end.

Hanging-paper-lantern-tutorial-muslim-craft-tip.jpg

Step 4: Unfold the paper and glue the corners together

When you unfold the paper, it should be intact with a noticeable bend in the middle. Glue the top two corners together so that the incisions are vertical. Then, glue the bottom corners together too.

Step 6: Make the handle

Grab that strip of patterned paper you cut off and glue it like a handle.

Now you should have a beautiful lantern!

Stina’s Favourite Read Alouds for Kids

I LOVE children’s books! If I have the opportunity to sit down and read quietly on my own I will without a doubt open up the latest picture books or novel from Vancouver Kidsbooks to enjoy!

As a teacher I have been passionate about integrating books and stories into my teaching daily. As a mom, reading to my children at bedtime (or anytime!) is my favourite thing to do with them. There is nothing better than snuggling up and sharing a story, using our imagination or learning something new from a book.

I also LOVE the library! Funny because I am one of the loudest people you may ever meet! But in all honestly going into a library and browsing through the books and finding new gems either on my own, with my kids or with my students is the BEST! I love how the library can provide resources as well as act as a community hub for learning, connecting and accessing information. This may have been what led me to my most recent position as a Teacher Librarian.

Because we are spending A LOT of time at home with our kiddos these days I thought I would share some of my favourite read alouds for my own children and my students each Monday.

Have a look and make sure to share your faves too!

Susan Verde with illustrator Peter Reynolds write a series of books focusing on themes like empathy, yoga, mindfulness, love, and being human. These are my “go to’s” if we need a story to calm us down or to teach important lessons on kindness.

Elise Gravel writes and illustrates books in French and English that are not only hilarious and clever, they have the cutest fun illustrations. This particular book sparked a school wide inquiry into mushrooms for over three months in my library last year! You must check it out! Mushrooms are WAY COOL!

The first time I picked up this book it brought me to tears within seconds. Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris wrote this book to honour the words that were removed from the most recent version of the Children’s Oxford Dictionary that all related to nature and the natural environment. They use poems and spells along with breathtaking illustrations in an effort to keep children’s connections with the natural world alive.

Screen Shot 2020-05-24 at 11.47.22 PM

Oh my gosh if you have not picked up a Todd Parr book you must now! Todd writes beautiful picture books that teach crucial lessons for children (and adults) of all ages. My kids adore his bright, colourful and fun illustrations and every time we read one of his books we end up having incredibly valuable conversations around topics such as families, love, being different, feelings, gratitude, loss, kindness and peace.

Screen Shot 2020-05-24 at 11.47.43 PM

Bree Galbraith writes beautiful and captivating stories for children of all ages. Usha and the Stolen Sun illustrated by Josee Bisaillon is Bree’s most recent book and one of our immediate favourites. Every time we read Usha my kids have new questions about how the world works and how they too, like Usha, can make a difference through communication and compassion.

How to Teach Your Child to Read

With us all being home with our children 24/7 and now having to be teachers as well as parents I thought I (Bre) would put together a simple step by step post on how to teach your child to start reading using the techniques that I learned as an Orton Gillingham Tutor. There’s some very basic and fun things you can do right away that you can incorporate into your daily routine. You can also check out my resources that I use with my own students and children.

Step 1: Pre-Reading Behaviors

There are activities that don’t look like reading at all, but they set the stage for your child to learn the concept. You can do these activities right now to help introduce the concept of reading.

Look for and encourage the following:

  • print on signs, labels, packaging, etc. Kids can know that a sign says “Stop” before they can actually read the letters.
  • sounds with their names “Jakey Jakey Bo Bakey!”
  • rhyming games-ask “What rhymes with cat?”
  • Pointing to words as you read to them.
  • Making them aware of sound discrimination – “Wwwwwesley has the wwwwiggles. Those start with the same sound.”

You can incorporate these activities into your daily life to help them start to become aware of the concept of reading.

Continue reading aloud to your child. Let them chose the books to read. Take time to point out things that you notice, for example, “Hey there’s a J! Your name starts with J. J says /j/.  Ask them questions about what is happening in the book to practice comprehension and check if they are understanding what they are reading.

If children learn that reading is an enjoyable experience through read-alouds, they will be motivated to learn the skill themselves.

Step 2: Learning Letters

Teach letter names and play matching games with lower and upper case.

You can make cards easily at home or purchase them on Amazon.

Start teaching the sounds of each letter.  Pinterest has all sorts of resources for teaching sounds like charts and games. Amazon is also great for resources too!

Letters don’t have to be taught in alphabetical order. If you teach the letters a, m, t, and s, the child can start to read simple words like

cat

mat

sat

How exciting to say “Wow! Now you’re reading!” They’ll be so proud of themselves.

Master the vowels! Every syllable and word has a vowel. Mastering the vowels is crucial for reading and spelling correctly.

You can continue to play all sorts of activities like practising sounds by writing chalk all over the sidewalk and calling out the sound and having them jump to it. Go fishing for sounds in the bathtub. Put sticky notes of sounds all over the house and have them go on a hunt as you call each sound out. The games are unlimited and using your senses and movement helps kids to retain information better. Remember to do lots and lots of fun review!

Step 3: Blending Sounds

Knowing single letters to reading words is all about blending the sounds together. Try this!

  1. Start with two or three letter words. Point to the letters and say each sound. Only work with phonetic words. No sight words yet! (Words you can’t sound out phonetically)
  2. Then start back at the beginning of the word. Slide your finger slowly under the letters as you stretch the sounds and put them together.
  3. Have the child try to do it.
  4. Make a blending chart like this and create word families. Cat, sat, bat, mat, etc.

Once this basic concept is learned then you can start to teach sight words. I will do another post on ways to teach sight words. In the meantime here are some of my favourite resources that you can find on Amazon to help reinforce basic reading skills.

Bre’s Favourite Resources to Reinforce Basic Reading Skills.
